Some of these brooms may still be available for sale; I also have many more on hand...just e-mail or call.

Broom Winder Restoration

Progress...Cleaned & rubbed with boiled linseed oil...Started the frame....Repaired the tensioning system - that's the leather straps that loop over the upper shaft.  I added the eye bolts in the holes where the original design just had the leather knotted.  I also added a turnbuckle to adjust tension as the leather stretches.

Alton Holman Heritage Arts Brooms Alto Park Elementary

Last week, Carole Morse and I had the privilege of teaching a broom making class for Alton Holman Heritage Arts, Inc. in Cave Spring. Our students were a fantastic group of fifth-graders from Alto Park Elementary School in Rome, GA.

As you can see from the photo, each of them completed a cobweb broom, a whisk broom, and a hearth broom.  Kids, if you read this, thank you for being interested, thank you for listening, and most of all thank you for sticking with it when it got tough/frustrating.  We had a great time!

Great-looking brooms!                                                                                                                                                                      Very proud of y'all.

19th-century broom winder

Bought a 19th-century broom winder in Berea last month. Getting ready to add some bushings where the wood-on-wood rotation happens then convert it to a kick-winder. The trick will be to do it with the least amount of modifications to the existing antique machine.

So I'm branching out ;) and making some besoms / yard brooms. Here's a bundle of Chinese Privet twigs (ligustrum sinense). While not a traditional species for construction of these brooms, CP makes a nice, flexible twig & it's VERY common around here. I'm also using some gallberry twigs, but that's a lot less common here in the Piedmont. Gallberry was one of the go-to species for yard-broom making in the coastal Deep South.

I'm also using some Gallberry twigs, but I haven't found any Gallberry (ilex glabra, ilex  coriacae, or inkberry) here in the Piedmont. I'll have to go back home to the piney flats to get more.  Gallberry was THE go-to species for yard-broom making in the coastal Deep South.

Meet "The Happy Bus." She was a longtime member of my brother's clan and well-beloved by the nieces and nephew. She recently joined the Broom Brothers' fleet of rolling bread boxes. Once I get the brakes bled & the carb & fuse box squared away you might meet her at a nearby festival.
